A crowded street view in downtown Fort Myers

Neighborhood Spotlight: Downtown Fort Myers

Brick-paved streets and public art add charm to the laid-back atmosphere of Fort Myers’ downtown, known to locals as the historic River District. With views of the Caloosahatchee River framed by swaying palms, a stroll down these quaint streets will put you into a vacation state of mind. From coffee shops to seafood restaurants and art galleries to boutiques, there’s something to keep you fed (or entertained) from morning till well after sunset.

Peer Into Southwest Florida History

Perched on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River, Burroughs Home & Gardens offers a look into lavish living in the early 20th century. Built in the Georgian Revival style, this well-preserved mansion once hosted luminaries of the time, including Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh.

Just a few miles away are the historic and beautifully maintained Edison and Ford Winter Estates. Wander around these adjacent homes set on more than 20 acres of botanical gardens, then join a guide to explore the museum and working laboratory of these important U.S. inventors and visionaries.

Enriching Excursions

Bring the kids on a journey full of discovery at the IMAG History & Science Center. Interactive exhibits inspire everyone’s inner scientist as you touch stingrays, meet native creatures in the Animal Lab and 3,200-gallon saltwater tank, and learn how weather forces shape the Earth.

For a bit of elevated entertainment, visit the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center, one of the premier art destinations in the region. Roam the art gallery then head up to Sidney’s Rooftop for special events that encompass live music performances, film festivals, yoga, and wine and paint nights — or just to enjoy 360° views while sipping on a cocktail.

Shopping on First Street and Beyond

Explore apothecaries and perfumeries and shop for handcrafted soaps, repurposed glassworks and much more along this vibrant road. You can hunt for colorful crystals at Quartz & Clover, and you’re sure to find treasured souvenirs at The Franklin Shops, a two-story emporium that creates spaces for artisans of all kinds. Inside Wild At Heart Flower Bar & Mercantile, you can build your own bouquet and browse around for dried herbs, teas and even find biodegradable greeting cards embedded with wildflower seeds.

Grazing Around Downtown

Start the day right at Shift Coffee Bar, where you’ll find friendly baristas and a menu full of perfect pick-me-ups, like a hot cortado, cold foam with whipped cream or a golden latte. Look for pop-ups with The Wurst Street Dogs to pair your Shift coffee with an egg-topped breakfast hot dog. Or you can grab a seat at the nostalgic Ella Mae’s Diner inside the Luminary Hotel & Co. — where all-day breakfast favorites are inspired by Southern traditions.

When afternoon hunger hits, indulge in a decadent high tea at Wisteria Tea Room & Cafe, choosing from a large collection of gourmet teas along with fresh-baked scones, sweet desserts and savory lunches — all made in-house. Enjoy a taste of Maine lobster at Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls or grab a New York–style slice at Downtown House of Pizza.

Whether it’s date night or a night out with friends, downtown after dark is always a delight. Pair cocktails, seafood and river views in the opulent atmospheres of The Silver King Ocean Brasserie or Oxbow. It’s always a good time to brewery hop at sudsy spots like Coastal Dayz BreweryMillennial Brewing Company and Voodoo Brewing.

Art Walk and Music Walk

Held on the first Friday of every month, the Fort Myers Art Walk invites you to wander freely on the streets as artists showcase their works. Browse handmade artwork, wander into galleries, pop into shops that are open late, and enjoy the lively energy all around town. On the third Friday of each month, the Music Walk delivers live performances and strolling musicians. Catch outdoor performances or indoor concerts in lively downtown dives, like 10 Twenty Five.

With so much to explore in Fort Myers’ historic River District, you might find yourself planning a return trip before you’ve even left.
